IBM, Columbia University Launch Green Tech Training Initiative

IBM and professors from Columbia University in New York City have joined forces to get more people trained for some of the higher-level green tech jobs that have started opening up.

Columbia is already a very environmentally-focused school, offering 23 environmental studies-related degrees. But according to an article posted on SolveClimate.com, by partnering with IBM through the Smarter Students for a Smarter Planet initiative, the university will gain access to things like:

"...software that relates to energy management, as well as courseware, cloud computing capabilities, smart systems, analytics, technology roadmaps, and the like."

All of these things are going to be integrated into Columbia's first-year design course, which is mandatory for all engineering students. The tools will also be used to help train students in other areas, such as project management, systems integration and data analysis, with the goal of turning out more well-rounded engineering graduates.

A couple of Microsoft certifications pertaining to Windows Server 2008 have received a rare boost -- ANSI accreditation.

The company announced on its Born To Learn blog that the certifications attained that ISO 17024 approval. The certifications are:

• Microsoft Certified IT Professional: Windows Server 2008 Server Administrator
• Microsoft Certified IT Professional: Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Administrator

What does that mean for those who have gotten those credentials? Increased prestige -- these are the first two product-specific certs to get ISO 17024 accreditation. Microsoft says on the blog, correctly, that

ANSI accreditation is recognized as the highest standard in personnel certification accreditation and is the only accreditation that is recognized by governments around the world.

That's the other big perk -- it makes you more valuable. It's a certification that may be able to help you land public-sector jobs, which require more than just a vendor cert. Getting ANSI means the cert meets specific requirements, certain standards. And in this environment, every advantage, no matter how small, is crucial.

The growing demand for online applications could push the number of mobile devices accessing the Internet past 1 billion by 2013, IDC said in a survey issued on Wednesday.

The explosion in the number of Internet-capable mobile devices will grow with the number of mobile users seeking access to online services, which could top 900 million by 2013, IDC said. Some of the popular online activities through mobile devices today include accessing news and search engine Web sites, downloading multimedia files and exchanging e-mail and instant messages.
