Something common to dealing with any exam is controlling one's stress. We all know that multiple choices on an exam can get us into a swirl of confusion when we have additional anxiety . And in terms of a medical exam we often cannot even hear what's being said when our minds are racing. This destroys our mental clarity and peace of mind as well as judgement.

Cert-holders Need Soft Skills

Are certifications outdated? That's the conclusion from an analyst who studies the industry. An article on the tech job search site Dice.com quotes David Foote as saying the following:

"We've reached a point in our evolutionary rung that has outdistanced the value of certifications," says David Foote, chief executive and chief research officer for Foote Partners. "It is not that technology is not important, but other skills - especially in customer-facing jobs - are more important."

Although I disagree with the thrust of that quote -- in fact, there are several other folks quoted in the story who affirm the value of certifications -- Foote does make a valuable point. Soft skills, like communication, are becoming increasingly important.

Knowing how to write clear, concise emails, for example, can go a long way toward helping your career. Talking to non-tech-savvy folks in a way that doesn't make them feel stupid is another way. Sending out plenty of warning -- at least two emails -- before making a major computer system change that will affect the way your end-users go about doing their jobs is another.

Do you get my point here? Knowing the technology is only half the battle. You have to remember the other people in your organization, and make things as easy for them as possible with good communication. You might be surprised -- it could be those skills, not your wizardy with Group Policy -- that gets you that promotion and raise.

The growing demand for online applications could push the number of mobile devices accessing the Internet past 1 billion by 2013, IDC said in a survey issued on Wednesday.

Ford Plans Wi-Fi On Board

Ford, one of the failing auto industry's big dogs, announced it will nerd-out and bring Wi-Fi to a line of its vehicles. Starting in 2010, SYNC-equipped Ford cars and trucks will use not only currently available communications technologies (such as hands-free calling, audible text messages, and real-time traffic), they will also be "rolling Wi-Fi hotspots." This is perfect for when your school-age offspring needs to hop on the Internet for last-minute research, or -- more likely -- for businesspeople hacking out e-mails without paying much attention to the road.

Functioning much in the same way as hotspot cards from wireless providers, a small data card will be implanted in the vehicle allowing for connection without the hassle of cords.

Top Skills Include Mobile Development, Open Source

Not too long ago, Elance, an online job board for contractors and service providers, released a report that noted its online talent pool earned more than $20 million in the first quarter of 2010, with information technology as one of the top-performing categories.

According to the report, here are some of today's most sought-after IT skills that you should be seriously thinking about acquiring:

  • Mobile Development: This category saw a 98 percent increase in the number of job posted by employers, and Elance attributed the increase to the emergence of devices such as Apple's iPad and the next generation of iPhone, as well as the popularity of Google's Android mobile operating system.

  • Open Source: Open source technologies make up 20 percent of Elance's IT Top 50 Skills list. Popular skills include working with content management systems such as WordPress, Joomla! and Drupal, as well as open source database systems such as MySQL, and mobile, e-commerce and web server technologies.

  • Cloud Computing: Job prospects for cloud computing are on the increase, with popular cloud computing languages such as PHP, ASP.NET, Ruby on Rails and Python making it onto the top 50 IT skills list.

  • Social Media: These include application development skills for popular social networking sites such as Facebook.
