Google Earth Reveals the Devastation in Haiti

Google responded to the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti earlier this week by working with satellite imagery company GeoEye to quickly make images of the destruction available in Google Earth and Google Maps. The images were taken at approximately 10:27 a.m. Eastern time on Wednesday, and could prove to be a helpful tool for aid organizations attempting to survey and assess the damage to Haiti's infrastructure.

(Click on any of the images in the story to see a larger version; all show satellite images of areas in Haiti before and after the earthquake hit.)

Beware of In-app Purchases on Your child's new iPod!

If Santa brought you or your child a new iPod or iPad for Christmas then you will definitely want to enable it's parental controls.

Even if it's yours and not your child's iPod you might want to turn off the in-app purchase feature. One of my family members ended up with a bill for several hundred dollars worth of in-app purchases because this feature wasn't locked down and a child got a hold of the iPod and racked up a bunch of in-app charges.  In-app purchases are how many "Freemium" app developers make their money. They make the game free to download but charge for additional content. Even kids that aren't old enough to read can end up buying things in the app without anyone knowing it until they get the bill.

Check out the article linked above to learn how to turn this feature off completely. Did your child accidentally buy s huge amount of in-app merchandise? Let us know your own in-app purchase horror story in the comment section below.

Google Begins Replying to More Nexus One Complaints

Google appears to be trying to boost its customer support for Nexus One customers, posting replies to many more queries on its online forum.

Google has come under fire since the launch of the Nexus One after hundreds of messages were posted with complaints or questions about the phone. Many customers said that after calling T-Mobile they were referred to HTC, the phone's maker, or the reverse. Google does not have a customer-service phone line, and customers sending e-mails were being told to wait one or two days for a reply.

GAO: FCC Needs to Better Monitor Mobile Carriers

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission needs to improve its oversight of mobile telephone carriers, because the agency has no way to measure the outcomes of the tens of thousands of complaints it receives each year, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) said in a report released Thursday.

Even though 84 percent of U.S. mobile-phone customers are very or somewhat satisfied with their service, many U.S. residents aren't aware that they can complain about problems to the FCC, and a significant number of customers have had problems with billing, terms-of-service contracts, or customer service, said the GAO, based on surveys it conducted.
