Some Barnes & Noble Nook Buyers Get $100 Voucher Barnes & Noble is giving $100 gift certificates to Nook e-reader buyers who placed orders for the devices to be delivered before the holidays and now won't receive them until after the Christmas. The company had hoped that most preorders from November would be delivered by December 24, but says that some won't arrive on time. Unveiled in late October, the Barnes & Noble Nook has seen several delays and is already out of stock across the country. The $259 e-book reader is the main competitor to Amazon's Kindle device, and it has received mixed reviews due to several software slowdowns. Microsoft announced that Microsoft Official Course 6292, Installing and Configuring Windows 7, is ready for you to take (after paying, of course!) It's a three-day, instructor-led course. Topics include upgrading to Windows 7; installation and migration issues; configuration parameters and more. The goal is to help you prep for Exam 70-680, TS: Windows 7, Configuring. With fewer than two weeks until Windows 7 is out, interest in the operating system is spiking. Given how poorly Windows Vista was received, I expect quick and broad adoption of Windows 7. Getting certified ASAP makes a lot of sense, and this training can serve as a springboard. Not long ago, I wrote about how Linux skills are in high demand these days. While contributors to the Linux kernel have traditionally been portrayed as hobbyists or volunteers, I recently came across an article in APC magazine that cited some interesting stats about where Linux code is coming from. In a Linux.conf.au presentation, Jonathan Corbet, a kernel contributor and the founder of LWN.net, pointed out that, between December 2009 and January 2010:

According to this year's U.S. IT Salary Survey from InformationWeek, technology pros shouldn't get too optimistic when asking for a pay raise in 2010 - because it's pretty unlikely that they're going to receive one. The survey found that the median pay raise for IT pros in 2010 is zero percent. That's right – zilch – and unfortunately, it applies to both base salaries and total compensation, including bonuses. Here are just a few of the other findings of the survey, based on responses from 20,492 IT pros who participated between November 2009 and January 2010:
