You might be interested to learn that the (ISC)2 – the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium – just recently announced that it has made its CSSLP test available in computer-based format. This is the first exam the (ISC)2 has moved over from the traditional paper-and-pencil delivery. The organization says it plans to phase in computer-based testing for the rest of its exams (such as CISSP and SSCP) over the next three years. One of the goals of moving to a computer-based exam delivery is to keep up with the expected growth in the number of IT security professionals over the next few years. IBM and professors from Columbia University in New York City have joined forces to get more people trained for some of the higher-level green tech jobs that have started opening up. Columbia is already a very environmentally-focused school, offering 23 environmental studies-related degrees. But according to an article posted on SolveClimate.com, by partnering with IBM through the Smarter Students for a Smarter Planet initiative, the university will gain access to things like: "...software that relates to energy management, as well as courseware, cloud computing capabilities, smart systems, analytics, technology roadmaps, and the like." All of these things are going to be integrated into Columbia's first-year design course, which is mandatory for all engineering students. The tools will also be used to help train students in other areas, such as project management, systems integration and data analysis, with the goal of turning out more well-rounded engineering graduates. For more information, here is the video of IBM's and Columbia's green jobs announcement. Even though 84 percent of U.S. mobile-phone customers are very or somewhat satisfied with their service, many U.S. residents aren't aware that they can complain about problems to the FCC, and a significant number of customers have had problems with billing, terms-of-service contracts, or customer service, said the GAO, based on surveys it conducted. Some Barnes & Noble Nook Buyers Get $100 Voucher Barnes & Noble is giving $100 gift certificates to Nook e-reader buyers who placed orders for the devices to be delivered before the holidays and now won't receive them until after the Christmas. The company had hoped that most preorders from November would be delivered by December 24, but says that some won't arrive on time. Unveiled in late October, the Barnes & Noble Nook has seen several delays and is already out of stock across the country. The $259 e-book reader is the main competitor to Amazon's Kindle device, and it has received mixed reviews due to several software slowdowns. Called CertView, it requires a username and password. Once logged on, a host of information is available, including certification history, certification logos, and a very cool tool that allows you to verify your certification to a third party. This last function is pretty exciting, I think. It gives a potential or current employer, or client, the ability to check out your certifications for themselves. They will get a login that will allow them to examine the section of CertView that contains your certifications. Very easy, very slick. Note that at your first logon, you'll need to provide demographic information from Pearson VUE, Oracle's new testing partner. I only bring this up because Oracle had a big "Warning" sign about it in its CertView overview video. Have that information on hand before you register for CertView, and enter it carefully, as you'll be locked out for awhile if you don't punch it in correctly. I really like CertView, and the forward thinking it represents from Oracle. It's a terrific tool for credential holders. Even if video games aren't your focus, getting a first or even secondary degree in the technical field might make you more competitive in this tough economy. There are even several certifications that don't require the commitment of a full degree that can make you more marketable.
