Try and Relax
A test is always more productive when you feel calm and prepared

Keeping Yourself Tranquil for Exams

Yes exams are scary. Whether it's for advancing your career or a medical situation you are afraid about. The best way to prepare is to study as well as to go in with a steady and clear mind.

Do you get tense before or during an exam?

Do you get headaches during exam times?

Do you find yourself unable to sleep the night before exams?

Do you sleep more before exams instead of studying?

Does your mind go blank during tests?

Do you remember the answers to test questions after you leave the test?

Do you feel you are unprepared for a test when you go in to take an exam, regardless of the amount of studying you do?

If you answered yes to any of the above you may be suffering from text anxiety. Anxiety can be expressed in both mental and physical ways. Mentally, you may feel worthless or stupid, or you may think your situation is hopeless. Physically, you may have a nervous stomach, sweaty palms, or the shakes going into an exam. So how do you overcome these obstacles to good test taking?

The first thing to keep in mind is that there are two requirements for successful test taking - 1) know the information and 2) demonstrate that knowledge. So how do you do this? Here are several tips on overcoming test anxiety:

Relax - Find a quiet room and sit down with your eyes closed; flex and relax different muscle groups in your body while visualizing a relaxing scene such as a beach at dawn. Desensitize - Picture yourself in test situations that make you anxious and replay them in your mind until you can relax while visualizing them. Take practice tests - Open your book and pick out new problems covering the information on the test -- time yourself and take a practice test. Stay away from other students who are nervous about the exam. Carry your notes to the exam as a security blanket - (but don’t use them of course!) Don’t cram! Spread out your studying over time and nightly reviews from class notes. Follow normal daily habits - Get enough sleep and fuel (food) in moderation! Think positive thoughts! - If you think you can you probably will! STUDY! - Like the Nike commercial say’s "Just do it." Follow these good habits and you should find your confidence build as you improve your test taking skills. And with improved skills should come better grades, something we all work for!

Quick Response or QR codes like the one in the picture above seem to be popping up everywhere these days. They are great for advertisers and marketers because they allow users to obtain product information and website addresses by scanning the multidimensional bar code with their smartphone's camera. Unfortunately hackers and criminals are also using QR codes to trick users into installing malware, or handing over personal information.

Before you scan another QR Code with your smartphone, check out our featured article on how to protect yourself from malicious QR codes being spread by criminals and hackers:
