The Dangers of Facebook Oversharing

Facebook Oversharing

When does sharing on Facebook become oversharing, and when does oversharing become a personal safety risk? We attempt to answer both of these questions in this week's featured article: The Dangers of Facebook Oversharing.

We're not talking about type of oversharing where you describe every detail of your day down to how the oat bran you ate that morning is helping your regularity. The oversharing we're discussing is the sharing of information that a stalker, thief, lawyer, or possibly an employer might use against you.

Do you share sensitive information, such as your location, on Facebook? Do you think oversharing is a personal safety risk? Let us know in the comments section below:

Some Barnes & Noble Nook Buyers Get $100 Voucher

Barnes & Noble is giving $100 gift certificates to Nook e-reader buyers who placed orders for the devices to be delivered before the holidays and now won't receive them until after the Christmas. The company had hoped that most preorders from November would be delivered by December 24, but says that some won't arrive on time.

Unveiled in late October, the Barnes & Noble Nook has seen several delays and is already out of stock across the country. The $259 e-book reader is the main competitor to Amazon's Kindle device, and it has received mixed reviews due to several software slowdowns.

The growing demand for online applications could push the number of mobile devices accessing the Internet past 1 billion by 2013, IDC said in a survey issued on Wednesday.

The explosion in the number of Internet-capable mobile devices will grow with the number of mobile users seeking access to online services, which could top 900 million by 2013, IDC said. Ford Plans Wi-Fi On Board

Ford, one of the failing auto industry's big dogs, announced it will nerd-out and bring Wi-Fi to a line of its vehicles. Starting in 2010, SYNC-equipped Ford cars and trucks will use not only currently available communications technologies (such as hands-free calling, audible text messages, and real-time traffic), they will also be "rolling Wi-Fi hotspots." This is perfect for when your school-age offspring needs to hop on the Internet for last-minute research, or -- more likely -- for businesspeople hacking out e-mails without paying much attention to the road.

Functioning much in the same way as hotspot cards from wireless providers, a small data card will be implanted in the vehicle allowing for connection without the hassle of cords.

Google Begins Replying to More Nexus One Complaints

Google appears to be trying to boost its customer support for Nexus One customers, posting replies to many more queries on its online forum.

Google has come under fire since the launch of the Nexus One after hundreds of messages were posted with complaints or questions about the phone. Many customers said that after calling T-Mobile they were referred to HTC, the phone's maker, or the reverse. Google does not have a customer-service phone line, and customers sending e-mails were being told to wait one or two days for a reply.

75% of Linux Contributors Getting Paid for Their Work

Not long ago, I wrote about how Linux skills are in high demand these days.

While contributors to the Linux kernel have traditionally been portrayed as hobbyists or volunteers, I recently came across an article in APC magazine that cited some interesting stats about where Linux code is coming from.

In a Linux.conf.au presentation, Jonathan Corbet, a kernel contributor and the founder of LWN.net, pointed out that, between December 2009 and January 2010:

  • 18 percent of kernel contributions came from people not affiliated with any single corporation (volunteers);
  • seven percent of contributions weren't classified;
  • 75 percent of contributors were paid to write Linux code as part of their jobs.

According to the article, these are some of the tech companies that have been hiring developers specifically to write Linux code:
