Current News in the Tech Industry: According to this year's U.S. IT Salary Survey from InformationWeek, technology pros shouldn't get too optimistic when asking for a pay raise in 2010 - because it's pretty unlikely that they're going to receive one. The survey found that the median pay raise for IT pros in 2010 is zero percent. That's right – zilch – and unfortunately, it applies to both base salaries and total compensation, including bonuses. Here are just a few of the other findings of the survey, based on responses from 20,492 IT pros who participated between November 2009 and January 2010:

Permalink | Comment | Email this Cert Offerings at Oracle OpenWorld Lots of news coming out of Oracle certification these days. This time, it's certification opportunities at Oracle's conference, Oracle OpenWorld 2009. OpenWorld, which starts Oct. 11 in San Francisco, is making its premier show more certification-friendly than ever. To start with, there's the Oracle Certification Program (OCP) lounge. The lounge is basically an informal networking space that allows attendees to rub elbows with other Oracle credential-holders. One additional perk is free access to Self Test Software practice exams, to help you prepare for your next cert. Oracle certification staff will also be available throughout the show, if you have any questions/comments. I find that making your opinion known in these types of settings can be valuable for you and the staff; if they're real professionals, they take any such feedback seriously. Finally, there are several certification sessions being presented at the show. That's an excellent chance to learn more about the various certification offerings from Oracle. One thing I don't see offered on the OpenWorld website is onsite certification testing. If this is the case, it seems like a missed opportunity to me. This is your certified community, Oracle; let them get or upgrade certifications while they're there! If onsite testing is being offered, I'm hoping someone from Oracle can correct me, and I'll add an update. It's offered at many vendor-sponsored shows, and always seems to be popular. IBM and professors from Columbia University in New York City have joined forces to get more people trained for some of the higher-level green tech jobs that have started opening up. Columbia is already a very environmentally-focused school, offering 23 environmental studies-related degrees. But according to an article posted on SolveClimate.com, by partnering with IBM through the Smarter Students for a Smarter Planet initiative, the university will gain access to things like: "...software that relates to energy management, as well as courseware, cloud computing capabilities, smart systems, analytics, technology roadmaps, and the like." All of these things are going to be integrated into Columbia's first-year design course, which is mandatory for all engineering students. The tools will also be used to help train students in other areas, such as project management, systems integration and data analysis, with the goal of turning out more well-rounded engineering graduates.
