And in terms of a medical exam we often cannot even hear what's being said when our minds are racing. This destroys our mental clarity and peace of mind as well as judgement.

Wow, Did That Go on Sale? Famous Tech Vaporware

Each year, the nation's largest geekfest, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), is full of hype, overhype, and beyond the valley of the hype. Remember the Internet Refrigerator?

And each year the hype (and overhype, and b.t.v.o.t. hype) inevitably leads to disappointment: Vendors dangle many alluring prototypes and product rumors in front of the assembled tech journalists and geeks during the week in Las Vegas, but many of the products never appear or arrive far later than scheduled and in a competely different format. Evidently, much of what is dangled in Vegas stays in Vegas.

Is Certification Important for Developers?

Certification, it seems to me, garners a lot more interest among the IT administrator audience than developers. Though there are plenty of certifications available for the programmer crowd, I don't sense the same level of passion that I do among admins.

But I don't know if this is a faulty perception on my part, or the reality. What do you say? If you're a developer and not interested in certification, why not? Or if you do get certified, what do you find it does for you? I'd like to get a good conversation going about this. Respond below, or feel free to send me an email, so we can talk directly about this.

Google Rules Search, Yahoo and Bing Lag Behind

While Microsoft's Bing might be getting a lot of attention, Google is still king of all things search.

Google's search rivals have been pulling out the stops over the last several months trying to take a chunk out of its market share, but so far it's not working, according to numbers released today from Experian Hitwise, an online market tracker.

With so many belts tightening, a lot of IT professionals who would have retired at the end of this year have decided to stay in the workforce and rebuild lost savings. PC Shipments Jump in the Fourth Quarter, IDC Says

Worldwide PC shipments soared during the fourth quarter, driven by historically low PC prices and an increased demand for laptops and netbooks, analyst firm IDC said Wednesday.

Shipments totaled 85.8 million units during the fourth quarter of 2009, growing 15.2 percent compared to the fourth quarter of 2008. The unexpected growth signals a possible end to the struggles the PC industry has gone through during the recession, IDC said in a statement.

Flat IT Salaries for 2010?

According to this year's U.S. IT Salary Survey from InformationWeek, technology pros shouldn't get too optimistic when asking for a pay raise in 2010 - because it's pretty unlikely that they're going to receive one.

The survey found that the median pay raise for IT pros in 2010 is zero percent. That's right – zilch – and unfortunately, it applies to both base salaries and total compensation, including bonuses.

Here are just a few of the other findings of the survey, based on responses from 20,492 IT pros who participated between November 2009 and January 2010:

  • 40 percent said they've had their pay frozen, versus 26 percent who said the same last year;
  • 15 percent have received pay cuts, while six percent experienced this in 2009;
  • 29 percent saw their benefits cut back, while last year 17 percent reported the same.
  • 23 percent said their careers have not been impacted by the economy, compared to 34 percent who said the same thing in 2009.
